The Construction of an Overhead Bridge at Bandar Kim Fung

And now under the lead of President Charles, the physical construction is commencing within the term and expected to be completed in 2010/2011 in which President Elect Soo Chee Ming will take over and oversee the completion. With an estimation of between RM600,000 and RM800,00, this construction is the biggest project undertaken by the Club. The official consultants for this project are Mr K.K Lee and Joseph Tung. The last time the club had undertaken such a big project was for the construction of the pavilion on Jalan Sultan (in front of the English Tea House) overseeing the Sandakan City. The pavilion was built during PP Perry Sung's term in 1969, which was later officially presented to the Municipal Council of Sandakan.

More photos in the Gallery. The term started with meetings and more meetings to implement all projects planned for the term 2009/2010. From conducting earnest community activities to serving members at fellowships, it was a busy term for many Sandakan Rotarians. It kick started with the first board of directors meeting which resulted in the official adoption of the CLP followed by the Installation of new Interact Committee at Sabah Hotel in August. Projects planned were to increase the number of Edu-care students, increase the number of PHSM contributors, joint organise SINDEX with the Rotary Club of Sandakan North, maximise Interact publicity, finalise the details for the construction of Bandar Kim Fung Bridge, and organise more fellowship gatherings for members. It is a full speed ahead to 2010/2011.
Visiting Edu-care Student Our main vision is always geared towards our youth who are our future leaders. One of our ongoing projects, the Educational Care Fund was initiated by PP Tsen Hock Yin 4 years ago. It started with 6 students and has risen to 20 as of this year. Who are these students? They are all from our backyard and if we are observant, we will find hordes of these unfortunate children who are victims of circumstances. They are scattered all around Sandakan, with some of them living as far off as mile 30. Some of them were born into immense poverty. Four of these children were found living in a small wooden shed by themselves under the care of relatives. They have no choice but to do adult chores like washing clothes, ironing, cleaning, etc with their small bare hands. If they are lucky, some of them may have food available on their tables but there are others who are not so fortunate. The daily menu more often than not comprises of steamed rice, topped with Maggie noodles for taste. On a particularly good day, they may be served the occasional scroungy piece of fish, which is often only sufficient for a kitten’s tummy. Going to school is no luxury. Two siblings, one who is twelve years old and the other, six in standard one, have to wake up at four every morning and walk to the bus stop by 5.00 am to catch the public bus to school in town. The journey to school takes an hour. These children are not orphans but owing to their family’s financial constraints and more often than not chaotic parental relationship, they have been neglected and deprived. These students were recommended to us by their respective school principals as they have shown keen interest in their academic performance. From there, we roll up our sleeves to go to their houses to investigate on the nature of each child, talk to the family and find out the ways in which we can help them. Our funding is solely dependent on the generosity of the Sandakan public with donations being accepted in cash and kind. We not only pay their educational expenses, they also receive monthly pocket money, free medical consultation and treatment, free quarterly education tutoring and assistance and basic food supplies, etc for a year. It costs the Club more than RM1,000.00 per person to meet the annual expenses of each one of these students. |
